Bid to charge for Ipswich planning advice

Charges for providing advice on planning applications in Ipswich are set to be introduced on a 12-month trial basis.

The proposals, being recommended for approval by the borough council's executive on 11 January, would see officers start charging from April.

It is recommended officers charge 10% of the formal planning application fee.

The report says most pre-application inquiries are carried out by agents who then pass on the cost to their clients.

At present the only other authority in Suffolk that charges for advice is St Edmundsbury Borough Council, based in Bury St Edmunds, says the report.

The scheme is part of plans save the planning department £20,000.
