The acting Dean of St Edmundsbury Cathedral in Suffolk is to become the next Canon Precentor at St Paul's Cathedral in London.

The Reverend Canon Michael Hampel has worked at St Edmundsbury, in Bury St Edmunds, since October 2004.

He took the role of acting dean last year when Very Reverend Neil Collings took early retirement. He died in June.

The Reverend Canon Dr Frances Ward became Dean of St Edmundsbury earlier this month.

She said: "He is a priest of flair and creativity, combined with holiness and great organisational ability, and I know he will flourish in this role in the centre of London, particularly with the opportunities that the Olympics and other ceremonial events will offer."

In his new role as Canon Precentor at St Paul's, the Reverend Canon Hampel will have primary responsibility for the liturgical and musical life of the cathedral.

He will take up the role in spring 2011.
