Man in court over girlfriend's death in Gran Canaria

A man from Suffolk has appeared in court accused of sending messages from his girlfriend's phone after she had died on holiday in the Canary Islands.

The body of Sarah Shields, 23, of Ipswich, was found in Gran Canaria on 7 July.

Christopher Chittock, 36, of Ipswich, is charged with perverting the course of justice by using her phone between 11 and 13 July.

He was remanded in custody by town magistrates until 27 July.

Chittock was accused of perverting the course of justice by "sending messages with the intention of persuading persons that the deceased was alive (which) precluded her murder being reported to the authorities".
