Ipswich man charged after Gran Canaria tourist's death

A 36-year-old man from Suffolk has been charged with perverting the course of justice over the death of a British tourist in the Canary Islands.

Police in Spain and Suffolk began an inquiry when the body of Sarah Shields, 23, was found in Gran Canaria.

Christopher Chittock, of Ipswich, is due to appear before Ipswich Magistrates' Court on Friday.

Suffolk Police said the body of a woman found on 7 July on Gran Canaria had been identified as Miss Shields.

"Sarah Shields was on a two-week holiday in Gran Canaria but was reported missing when she failed to return home on Sunday 11 July as planned," a police spokeswoman said.
