Police chase ended in multi-car crash in Staffordshire
A police chase that ended in a multi-vehicle accident in Staffordshire has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).
Five people were taken to hospital with serious injuries after the crash on the A53 in Stockton Brook at 17:15 BST.
A black Honda Civic, which was being pursued by Staffordshire Police, was one of the cars involved.
Although the police vehicle was not in the crash, officers said it was "normal procedure" to refer the incident.
The accident happened on a stretch of road between the Triangle Service Station and The Sportsman pub.
The Honda was travelling from Stoke-on-Trent towards Leek when it was in collision with a white Ford Fiesta and a red Dacia.
The man driving the Honda was taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital with serious head injuries.
The drivers and passengers of the two other vehicles were also taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Staffordshire Police said: "As is normal procedure in such circumstances the matter has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC)."
The road was closed for several hours but has now reopened.
