A human skull has been found on a Stafford shopping centre building site.

Police were called to the site of the Riverside building development off Cope Street on Thursday and cordoned off the area.

They reported the find to the coroner's office and called an anthropologist to the site on Friday to help analyse the remains.

The skull will be sent to carbon-dating specialists to establish its age, police said.

Officers left the scene on Friday after no more bones were found.

The work to build the £70m complex of 18 shops and a six-screen cinema started in January and is expected to finish by June 2016.

Developer LXB Retail Properties declined to comment.
