Media captionA petition to stop Stafford Shire Hall closing or being sold off by the county council has received nearly 3,000 signatures.

Nearly 3,000 people have signed a petition to protect Shire Hall in Stafford from closing or being sold.

Campaigners say they want to keep the building as the council considers closing the art gallery inside and relocating the library to save money.

The Georgian building also houses a former court room.

In December, the Conservative-run authority revealed plans to cut £109m from its budget over the next five years.

Campaigners have said that the building is a place of local and historical importance and a major focal point for the town.
