Three people have died and three others injured in a crash near Tamworth in Staffordshire.

Maggie Stewart, her son Damian, and his cousin Dion Walker-Smith died in the collision involving three cars and a lorry, the BBC understands.

Neither Ms Smith nor her sons have been formally identified by police, but the boys' football club and school have issued statements.

The crash happened in Trinity Road, Freasley, on Friday evening.

West Midlands Ambulance spokesman confirmed a woman and two men in one of the cars were declared dead at the scene.

'Tragic loss'

A man in another car was taken to Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield with neck pain while a woman in another car and the tipper truck driver also received treatment.

Both Damian, 16, and Dion, 15, played for Coton Green Football Club's under 16s team.

Coton Green FC secretary Sheila Scott confirmed all the weekend's fixtures were cancelled after they heard what had happened.

"Everyone is numb with the news at the moment," she said.

"It's hard to comprehend. It has knocked us for six and we're trying to cope as best we can. How the family is coping I do not know."

'Sincerest condolences'

A statement on the club website said: "Coton Green U16's are devastated to announce the tragic loss of Dion Walker-Smith and Damian Stewart in a road accident of 6th December 2013. Both players were popular team mates and their loss leaves a massive void in the lives of everyone they encountered.

"We all send our sincerest condolences to the Jody, Angie and the extended families of both lads at this saddest of times."

Tributes have also been held at Kingsbury School.

A statement on the school website said: "Thank you to everyone who attended to reflect on the passing of three of our own.

"The large turn-out demonstrated how well respected and loved Dion, Damian and Maggie were."

A police spokesman said the crash involved a Scania lorry and three cars - a red Hyundai Getz, a grey Peugeot 207 and a Mercedes. Officers are appealing for witnesses.
