Grant for Burton-upon-Trent brewing industry project

A project exploring a town's brewing industry has had a lottery grant of £43,500.

Former brewery workers from Burton-upon-Trent are being asked to share their stories with the arts team at East Staffordshire Borough Council.

The information collected will be shared in a free booklet, on a DVD and through social media.

There will also be an exhibition and weekend of events at the Brewhouse in October next year.

'Touched life'

The council said the project would research stories about living in the town in the 1960s and 1970s, featuring those who worked in the industry and "those whose lives have been touched by the industry".

Deputy leader for service commissioning Bernard Peters said: "It may be that you are an ex-brewery worker or may have a friend or family member who was.

"It may also be that the breweries touched your life in other ways, for example you may have had a connection through social activities or may have lived in a brewery owned property."

The National Brewery Centre and community groups will also be involved in the scheme.

The council added it would like to recruit and train a small number of volunteers in reminiscence, oral history and story-collecting techniques to gather and share the stories collected.
