Refuse lorry 'traps' elderly pair in Staffordshire
An elderly couple were left trapped under a refuse lorry after being hit by the vehicle in Staffordshire.
The collision with the 89-year-old man and woman, aged 77, from Uttoxeter, happened on Balance Street in the town shortly after 1030 GMT, police said.
The man managed to crawl out from underneath the lorry, but firefighters had to help rescue his wife who suffered serious injuries.
Both were taken to hospital. The lorry driver, aged 37, was not injured.
The woman suffered serious lower leg and abdominal injuries and her husband injured his hip and sustained cuts and bruises, West Midlands Ambulance Service said.
The road was closed for two-and-a-half hours.
