A man was found dead after a fire swept through a flat above a sweet shop in Staffordshire.

Six crews tackled the fire above Baa Humbugs in High Street, Wolstanton, Newcastle-under-Lyme, on Friday night.

An ambulance service spokesman said: "Unfortunately, nothing could be done to save a man inside the flat and he was confirmed dead at the scene."

Another man managed to escape out of a third-storey window by climbing on to scaffolding at the back of the flat.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 2040 GMT and discovered the flat "well alight," a service spokeswoman said.

A police spokesman said it was believed the man who died was the occupier of the flat, but it was not yet known how he died or how the fire started.

Scenes of crime officers will continue their investigations over the weekend.
