Billionaire businessman John Caudwell has suffered a head injury during a robbery at his 16th Century mansion.

Staffordshire Police said he had been struck with an iron bar when raiders burst into the kitchen at Broughton Hall, near Eccleshall, on Monday night.

The former Phones4U chief suffered a 1inch (2.5cm) gash to his forehead as cash and jewellery were taken.

His partner Claire Johnson and a female employee were attacked but not hurt.

A police spokeswoman said Mr Caudwell had also suffered bruising to his arms.

"He received treatment by paramedics at his home. He has since attended Nuffield Hospital for a check-up," she said.

The robbers were wearing balaclavas and dark clothing and escaped by running across fields near the Grade I listed property.

Mr Caudwell runs Caudwell Children, a charity which provides help for disabled children.

Police have asked for anyone with any information about the incident to contact them.
