Man arrested over attempted rape of woman on train

A man has been arrested after the attempted rape of a woman on a late night train.

The 27-year-old was travelling with her partner on the delayed 22:24 GMT train from Sheffield to Leeds on 19 November.

British Transport Police (BTP) said the incident happened while her partner was in the toilet.

A 33-year-old man, from Barnsley, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted rape and bailed until 20 January while police inquiries continue.

BTP said the woman did not reveal to her partner what had happened until the couple got off the train at Swinton station.

Det Insp Mick Jackson said: "Incidents of this nature on the railway network are rare, and it is vital that we establish the exact circumstances of what happened.

"The victim continues to be supported by specially trained officers as the investigation continues."
