A speeding driver who killed another motorist and injured four other people in a crash has been jailed for six years and four months.

Grahame Smith, 58, from Doncaster, died on 22 December when his Volvo car was struck by 22-year-old Taiyab Mehmood's Seat Leon in Pitsmoor Road, Sheffield.

The force of the collision ripped the engine from Mehmood's car and shunted Mr Smith's vehicle off the road.

Mehmood, from Sheffield, admitted causing death by dangerous driving.

'Lost future'

Mr Smith's partner Gillian Heptinstall, 57, and a 66-year-old man who were passengers in the Volvo both suffered serious injuries.

Ms Heptinstall suffered a serious brain injury, fractured elbow, broken arm and fingers and fractured ribs.

Two men - aged 19 and 20 - who were in Mehmood's car were also injured.

Ms Heptinstall, who together with Mr Smith was planning to retire in 2016, said: "I'm still struggling to come to terms with losing Grahame and the future we would have shared together.

Driving ban

"My life has irreparably changed and has become much more limited while I try to adjust to my injuries and work on my rehabilitation."

Mehmood, of Nottingham Street, who also admitted four counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, was jailed at Sheffield Crown Court.

He was also banned from driving for eight years and two months

Sgt Steve Askham, from South Yorkshire Police, said: "No prison sentence can ever bring Grahame back but I hope that today's sentencing can offer some comfort to his friends and family."
