A student accused of carrying a folded knife near Buckingham Palace has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

Chinese national Hang Zhang, 25, was arrested on Friday after being found near the South-Centre pedestrian gate of the royal palace in London.

He appeared before Westminster magistrates earlier charged with possession of an offensive weapon.

Mr Zhang, of Hawley Street, Sheffield, was told he must stay at an in-patient mental health facility in the city.

The Sheffield University student was sectioned under Section Two of the Act following an assessment by West London Mental Health Trust, the court was told.

He was released on conditional bail until his next appearance at the same court on 14 September.

Speaking through a Mandarin interpreter, Mr Zhang denied that he lived at the address given to the court.
