Murder investigation after man dies in Sheffield street

A murder investigation has been launched after a man died following an apparent attack in a Sheffield street.

Police said the unidentified man, believed to be in his 20s, was found on Staniforth Road, at 23:23 GMT on Thursday.

He was unconscious with serious head injuries and later died at the scene, despite being treated by paramedics.

Det Ch Insp Steve Handley said he believed "there were a number of men involved in an assault".

Mr Handley appealed for witnesses to the incident and added: " I would also urge anybody who may have been involved in the altercation to contact police and provide me with their version of what took place."

A post-mortem examination will take place later.
