Doncaster child rapist Edward Milne, 81, jailed

An 81-year-old man has been jailed for the "horrific" rape of a nine-year-old girl over an eight-year period.

Edward Milne, of Austen Avenue, Doncaster, admitted 11 counts of rape during a previous hearing at Sheffield Crown Court in October.

The offences took place during the 1990s and early part of 2000, the court heard.

On Monday, Milne was sentenced to 14 years in prison and placed on the sex offenders' register for life.

Milne was brought to justice after the victim contacted police in September 2014.

Det Cons Rebecca Breakwell, of South Yorkshire Police, said: "Milne began to carry out this abuse when the victim was only nine years old and he continued this horrific behaviour over a period of eight years.

"His victim was vulnerable and Milne took advantage of her trust in him.

"I cannot underestimate the pain the victim has been forced to live with as a result of this abuse.

"Her courage to come forward to police cannot be underestimated and Milne would not be spending life in prison was it not for her bravery."
