Thurcroft rider critical after horse attacked

A horse rider is in a critical condition after being thrown from her horse as it was pelted with stones.

The 28-year-old woman, from Thurcroft, was riding on a track in Wickersley when the animal reared up after being attacked by up to four people.

South Yorkshire Police said the rider suffered serious injuries and was now in hospital after undergoing surgery, despite initially being allowed home.

Details of the incident on 17 May have only just been released.

A force representative said the woman was riding a large, white horse when "three to four youths threw stones at the animal, causing it to rear up and throw the woman to the ground".

Det Insp Steve Ashmore, of South Yorkshire Police: "We are urging anyone who might have seen what happened or who has any information about the incident to come forward.

"We're also interested in hearing from anyone who has suffered similar problems in the area and will be visiting local stables.

"This incident shows the serious consequences of anti-social behaviour."
