Councillors in Somerset have launched a High Court bid to stop the merger of two Conservative-run local authorities.

West Somerset Council agreed to merge with neighbouring Taunton Deane Borough Council in September to save money.

However, some Taunton Deane councillors oppose the move and are seeking a full judicial review of the decision.

Councillor Ian Morrell said no consultation into the decision had taken place, which "needs to occur on important matters such as this".

The independent council member described a consultation as a "clear, common law requirement and duty".
