People who were evacuated after a digger ruptured a gas pipe have been allowed to return home.

Residents in six houses in Western Road, Yeovil were forced to leave after a "significant gas leak" on Monday.

Wales & West Utilities said the road had re-opened "under traffic lights, as it was before this incident".

It said engineers had worked through the night in "appalling weather" to tackle the problem, which happened during work to build new houses.

Stephen Pitman, from Wales & West Utilities, said: "We have now finished work to repair damage caused by third party contractors to a strategic gas pipe on Western Avenue in Yeovil.

"We would like to thank the community and road users for their patience, understanding and support while we finished this complex job as safely and as quickly as possible."
