A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempting to murder a police officer.

The officer was carrying out a stop and search on a man in Weston-super-Mare on Monday evening, when the suspect ran off.

The suspect was chased into Locking Road where he produced a knife and unsuccessfully tried to stab the officer, Avon and Somerset Police said.

A 21-year-old was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of Class A and Class C drugs.

Ch Insp Tina Robinson, said it was an "extremely concerning incident" in which an officer was "threatened and repeatedly lunged at with a knife".

"He was very shaken by the ordeal but thankfully wasn't injured," she said.

"The intervention of members of the public, who bravely came to the officer's aid, and the efforts of his colleagues helped prevent him being seriously injured, or worse."
