Ex-school staff member arrested over child abuse allegations

A former member of staff at a school in North Somerset has been arrested on suspicion of possessing indecent images of children and online grooming.

The 51-year-old-man was arrested following an investigation that began in June 2015, police said.

The inquiry was launched after the school raised concerns about his contact with former pupils.

Police said they had so far found no evidence of any physical sexual assault or identified any pupils at the school.

He will remain on police bail until March pending further inquiries.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police, said the man was "no longer employed in the education sector" but parents of children at the affected school were being notified.

"At this time our investigation does not involve any offences of physical sexual assault and we have not identified any victims connected with the school," he said.

A spokeswoman for North Somerset Council, said a letter had been sent out to all parents.

"We are co-operating with the police and are offering support to the school and school community while the police carry out their investigation," she said.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of possessing indecent images of children and inciting a child to commit a sexual act online.
