Work has begun de-silting Marine Lake in Clevedon in the first phase of plans designed to restore the lake and surrounding area.

The project includes a restored promenade, strengthened sea wall, paddling area and better access for water sports.

The design for the revamped lake has been awarded a grant of £800,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Construction is due to be finished by the end of August.

Marine Lake opened in 1929 and was a huge draw for visitors before cheap overseas package holidays became popular in the 1960s.

In 2004, a community partnership was established and since then the lake has been used for sailing, canoeing, open water swimming and model boat sailing.
