Man charged with Bath murder of Thomas Downey appears in court

A 46-year-old man has appeared in court charged with murdering a homeless man in Bath on Christmas Eve.

Darrell Richards, of no fixed address, appeared at Bristol Magistrates' Court where he was formally charged with the murder of Thomas Downey, 51.

Mr Downey, originally from Manchester but a regular around Bath city centre, was found under a railway arch on the Lower Bristol Road.

A post-mortem examination concluded he died from significant head injuries.

The accused was remanded to appear at Bristol Crown Court on Monday.

A 37-year-old man who was also arrested remains on police bail.

A third man, 33, was released without charge on Wednesday.
