A 46-year-old man has been charged with killing a homeless man in a "brutal attack" in Bath on Christmas Eve.

Darrell Richards, of no fixed address, has been charged with the murder of Thomas Downey, 51. He will appear at Bristol Magistrates' Court on Thursday.

Mr Downey, originally from Manchester but a regular around Bath city centre, was found under a railway arch on the Lower Bristol Road.

A post-mortem concluded he died from significant head injuries.

Two other men were arrested but one of them, a 33-year-old, was earlier released without charge. The other man, aged 37, remains on police bail pending further enquiries.
