Two in hospital after car crash at Wellington Waitrose

Two people have been taken to hospital after a car crashed into a supermarket in Somerset.

The vehicle hit a pillar supporting the roof of a cafe at the Waitrose store in Wellington at about 09:20 GMT.

The woman driver was released by fire crews and taken to Musgrove Park Hospital, in Taunton. Her injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

The second person in the vehicle was taken to the same hospital with leg injuries.

Devon and Somerset fire service said a window had been smashed in the crash and crews helped make the area safe.

Avon and Somerset Police said they were waiting for the car to be recovered.

Chris Reynard, the store's manager, said: "Our thoughts are with the driver who we wish a quick recovery, and we'd like to thank the emergency services for their response.

"The shop is open, but as a precaution we have temporarily closed the café while we await the attendance of a structural engineer."

Half the roof at the entrance of the same building collapsed in July during a large fire at the store, after which it was closed for three weeks.
