Security is stepped up at pumping stations on the Somerset Levels after 900 litres of fuel was stolen.

Thieves broke padlocks off the gates at the pumping station at Westonzoyland then cut a pipe from the fuel storage tank before siphoning off the diesel.

An Environment Agency spokesman said the theft happened between 18:00 and 23:00 GMT on Sunday.

Replacement fuel has been brought in and the pumps are back working to full capacity, the agency confirmed.

The agency has 12 pumping stations across the Somerset Levels.

An appeal has been made urging anyone who noticed suspicious activity at the Westonzoyland site to contact the police with details.
