Man from Plymouth area killed as car leaves M5

A man from the Plymouth area died when the car he was travelling in left the M5 on the Devon and Somerset border.

The crash happened between junctions 27 for Tiverton and 26 for Wellington, on Sunday afternoon.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said the vehicle went down an embankment ending up in a field where it hit a number of trees.

He added the victim, aged in his 50s, was treated at the scene but died shortly afterwards.

The motorway northbound was shut for several hours while investigators examined the circumstances of the accident.

No other vehicle was involved and police are appealing for witnesses.
