New swimming pool for Taunton approved

A new swimming pool and spa costing £5.4m is to be built in Taunton.

The facility will be built at Blackbrook Pavilion and will replace the old St James Street pool which is due to close.

The plans were approved by Taunton Deane Borough Council at a meeting on Thursday evening.

The pool, which will be used by the public and for school swimming lessons, will be funded through a £2m loan and cash from council reserves.

The leader of the Conservative-led council, John Williams, said: "We have to replace St James Street pool, that is a given.

"If we're all agreed it has to be replaced, then we should get on and do it."

Liberal Democrat councillor Jefferson Horsley said: "We are very, very concerned that this money could have been used for regeneration and growth within the town centre."

A third swimming pool, in Station Road, was given £500,000 last month to help fund a refurbishment.
