Fast broadband planned for Taunton

A council in Somerset says the promise of fast broadband for Taunton will open up opportunities for economic growth.

An expansion to BT's fibre optic network means from next autumn speeds up up to 60Mbps will be possible.

A Taunton Deane Borough Council spokesman said it welcomed the investment which would offer a huge boost to the town's economy.

"For businesses this offers many new services including fast backup systems and wider use of HD video," he said.

"For homes it means some members of a family could be watching different high definition movies or 3D TV, while others are gaming or working on complex graphics or video projects."

Earlier this week Virgin Media said it would offer speeds of up to 100Mbps (megabits per second) to more than 50% of UK homes by mid 2012 as a rival to BT's super-fast broadband.
