Skull and bones found on beach near Weston-super-Mare

A forensic investigation is being carried out after a human skull and bones were found on a beach in North Somerset.

A police spokesman said a group of children had made the grisly find at Sand Bay, near Weston-super-Mare, at about 1600 BST on 18 September.

Officers were called and the bones were retrieved. A police spokesman said they were believed to be human.

He said the circumstances were not thought to be suspicious.

An Avon and Somerset Constabulary spokesman said the remains had been given to a Home Office pathologist, who was carrying out an investigation.

He said it was thought they had been in the sea for several years.
