A dog suffered serious injuries to its mouth and legs after it was dragged by a car, police said.

The white Westland Terrier was attached to the back of a red Volkswagen Lupo driving along Aston Street in Wem on Sunday.

An off-duty police officer managed to free the dog, which is recovering from its injuries.

The female driver is assisting officers with their enquiries, West Mercia Police said.

The RSPCA is also assisting with the investigation.
