Explosion fears at Tafs timber yard fire in Telford

More than 40 firefighters have been tackling a major fire at a timber yard.

A 200m (656ft) cordon was set up around Tafs fence panel site in Telford, Shropshire after fire crews were alerted at about 21:00 GMT Tuesday.

There were fears that gas cylinders could explode and some people were evacuated before the fire was brought under control at about 01:00 GMT.

Twitter user @RobJones71 said the flames were visible above nearby homes. Crews remained on site overnight.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said a large quantity of wood and embers had caught fire and was initially spreading to surrounding areas.

Crews dealt with acetylene cylinders involved as police liaised with local residents.

West Mercia Police said officers closed Gower Street from Timber's island from 22:30 GMT until about midnight.
