Telford job centre closed by flood damage

Flooding has forced the temporary closure of Telford job centre.

Deputy manager Cathy Edwards said she and the centre manager arrived to find "water cascading into the centre of the building".

She said payments to clients were being automatically released and appointments being re-booked. It is hoped the centre will re-open on Tuesday.

The flood's cause is being investigated but was thought to have come from a burst pipe, Ms Edwards said.

A structural engineer is assessing the extent of the damage.

Ms Edwards said: "It is worse because it happened over the weekend, so obviously it could have been two days of damage.

"The carpets are absolutely saturated, there's wiring coming down and the toilets can't be used - so it is not safe for clients or staff."

Ms Edwards said managers had found a "little area" to work in and so were able to use computers and alert people who they had not been able to contact, who were due to turn up for appointments.
