Whitchurch fire station 'could be shared with police'

Police in north Shropshire could share a base with the county's fire service, according to the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC).

Whitchurch is one of several police stations in Shropshire due to close as part of £30m savings over the next three years.

West Mercia PCC Bill Longmore said basing officers at the town's fire station could work for both emergency services.

He said discussions were ongoing.

"I'm keen to come up with an arrangement that works for us both as soon as possible," Mr Longmore said.

Mr Longmore said despite the planned closure of Whitchurch's police station, he wanted police to keep a visible presence in the town.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service is itself looking to make budget savings of £1.7m.
