Upper Edgebold helicopter crash due to engine fault

A helicopter crash on the outskirts of Shrewsbury was due to engine failure caused by a damaged turbine bearing, a report has revealed.

The Jet Ranger came down in a field close to a farm in Upper Edgebold just after 16:00 BST on 4 October.

Substantial damage was caused to the helicopter but the 61-year-old pilot did not need hospital treatment.

An Air Accidents Investigation Branch report said the bearing damage was most likely caused by oil starvation.

It also revealed pilot had considered a precautionary landing when the engine turbine temperature reached its limit but chose to press on when the problem seemed to resolve itself.
