Beech House Canal Bridge closed for nine weeks

A bridge over the Shropshire Union Canal is to be closed for nine weeks for essential safety work.

The Beech House Canal Bridge at Ellesmere will be reinforced with concrete, Shropshire Council said.

John Williams, from the council, said the work was "essential" to ensure it "remains functional in the long term".

Work will start on 1 July to minimise disruption and coincide with the nearby Ellesmere College's summer holiday period, the council said.

Pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to use the bridge while the work is carried out.

The council said the canal will also need to be closed later in the year to allow work to be carried out on the underside of the bridge.

The Canal and Rivers Trust suggested closing the waterway for two weeks in November, a spokesperson said.
