Shrewsbury murder inquiry: Three men arrested

Three men have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a 23-year-old man was fatally stabbed in Shropshire.

The man was pronounced dead at 18:55 GMT on Tuesday shortly after arriving at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

Police said the man was taken to hospital following a dispute involving between 10 and 20 young men at Monkmoor Recreation Ground, in Shrewsbury.

A Home Office pathologist is expected to carry out a post-mortem examination later. The dead man has not been named.

'Vitally important'

Det Ch Insp Dave Andrews said the dispute happened at about 18:00 GMT on Tuesday.

"It appears there was a confrontation involving a number of people resulting in a man receiving stab wounds," he said.

He said one man was arrested at an address near Shrewsbury on Tuesday night. A second man was arrested in Shrewsbury at about 04:30 GMT and a third man was detained at 07:45 GMT in Telford.

The three suspects, all in their 20s, are being questioned at Shrewsbury and Telford police stations.

He added: "I am appealing for witnesses to contact the police as a matter of urgency. It is vitally important anyone present at the recreation ground comes forward without delay.

"We already have a number of witnesses but we want all those who were present during this disturbance to contact us now rather than the police coming to them in the coming days."
