Shropshire council's road grit stock gets 1,000 tonnes boost

An extra 1,000 tonnes of salt has been secured by Shropshire Council to grit the county's main roads.

On top of a fleet of 25 gritters, the council said it has farming contractors with gritting vehicles who can assist.

The 21,000 tonnes bought, compared to 20,000 in 2010, is enough to ensure the most important routes are gritted, a spokesman said.

The main routes will be gritted before 08:00 GMT followed by secondary routes if resources allow, he added.
