Oswestry and Wem Learn Direct centres saved

The immediate future of two Shropshire adult learning centres has been secured with a new contract worth £200,000.

Learn Direct centres in Oswestry and Wem, run by Walford and North Shropshire College, were due to close after central contracts were cancelled.

The college has won a 12-month deal to help get adults back into work.

College Principal Andrew Tyley said the whole community had backed a campaign to save the centres.

"We've had help from the MP, from Oswestry Town Council, from Shropshire Council, from Oswestry Community Action, from learners and from employers," he said.

He added the funding could help deliver courses for 250 to 300 adult learners in the towns over the next year.

Walford college had argued it was vital for people living in market towns to have local access to Learn Direct.
