Shropshire youth hostel in £450,000 revamp

More than £450,000 is being spent in a revamp of a Shropshire youth hostel at a 16th Century site.

Wilderhope Manor Hostel, near Much Wenlock, is getting the cash under Youth Hostel Association plans to invest more than £4m at sites. Another eight facilities are set to close.

The scheme involves improvements to accommodation, including en suite rooms and security.

Work should start in November at the National Trust-owned hostel.

'Fantastic area'

Operations manager for the association Paul Sapwell said: "In some areas we've had to look at hostels and say perhaps they're not going to be viable for the future.

"We've closed them in order to use the money that we get from that to invest in others."

He said the Shropshire hostel was in "a fantastic area".

Mr Sapwell added: "In terms of unique sites, they don't come much better than an Elizabethan manor house.

"We're not trying to turn our youth hostels into hotels.

"At the end of the day they are still youth hostels and particularly we want to retain a lot of the character of the hostels that we're investing in."
