A man has been found dead after a fire broke out at a house in Shropshire.

Emergency crews were called to the property at The Meadows, Hodnet, Market Drayton, at about 1230 GMT on Tuesday after a neighbour heard a smoke alarm.

The fire broke out in the living room, where the man was found, West Mercia Police said.

An ambulance service spokeswoman said the man had suffered significant burns and nothing could be done save him. He was confirmed dead at the scene.

Police officers had entered the property with fire crews.

The cause of the fire was being investigated but there did not appear to be any suspicious circumstances, police said.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus said they dealt with a small fire on the ground floor using a hose reel jet.

A post-mortem examination will take place to establish the cause of death.
