More West Mercia Police officers to wear body cameras

West Mercia Police officers in south Shropshire have started wearing head and body cameras for the first time.

More than 100 cameras are already used by officers patrolling the force area following their introduction in June 2009, a spokesman said.

Now, the equipment has been introduced in Ludlow and will also be used by community support officers.

The cameras have been described as a "very useful and welcome addition", a spokesman added.

Sgt Rebecca Riley said: "Police officers and CSOs now have the facility to be kitted out with body cameras while on patrol.

"This enables them to record sound and pictures in any situation they encounter and will assist in providing crucial evidence during court cases.

"The equipment is already in use by officers in other parts of West Mercia and has helped reduce crime and disorder in these areas."
