Shropshire Council spending database published online

A database of all Shropshire Council's expenditure greater than £500 has been published online.

The payments are published in a monthly spreadsheet, listing the contractors used and the amounts paid starting from August.

In August, Shropshire Council spent about £30m on 6,164 transactions.

The government has asked all councils to increase public spending transparency by publishing their expenditure starting in 2011.

Shropshire Council leader Keith Barrow said: "It's important that councils are as open as possible about what they spend people's hard-earned council tax on, and I'm pleased we are ahead of the game by publishing these figures before many other councils."

"I've been through the expenditure list myself and it demonstrates the huge breadth of services the council provides, as well as the valuable business it gives to the local economy," he added.

The council has invited people to suggest possible budget savings based on its published expenditure.
