Shrewsbury straw fires 'put lives at risk'

People setting fire to straw in a field at Shrewsbury are putting lives at risk, police have warned.

Seven incidents at the back of the Wilfred Owen School off Hearne Way and Telford Way were reported to police in the last ten days.

Investigating officer Pc Kerry Hawkins said: "Each time the Fire Service is called out leaves their own resources stretched."

Pc Hawkins said police believed groups of youths were responsible.

She added: "If these calls coincide with a house fire or a serious blaze where people are trapped, then clearly lives will be at risk."
