Slate sale to help repair Telford church

People are being urged to buy a roof slate to help towards the £200,000 repairs of a Shropshire church.

Residents in Wellington in Telford can buy a slate at Christ Church, just off Mill Bank, for £5 in memory or celebration of a loved one or event.

It was hoped the initiative would raise £30,000 for work at the site.

Earlier this year the church was granted £105,000 from English Heritage, church warden Richard Page said.

The planned project would involve replacing slates on a roof and carrying out repairs to stonework on the tower.

The appeal at the church will be launched on Sunday.

Mr Page said: "That money [£30,000] will go a long way towards bridging the gap between what English Heritage have granted us and what we actually require.

"Raising money at the moment in the current economy is not easy.

"Christ Church is here for the community.

"Hopefully the community will see its role in supporting the church."
