Two rescued after cyclist falls into river

Two people, one in a life-threatening condition, were rescued from the River Cherwell in Oxford after a cyclist fell in the water.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service deployed a search boat when it was called to Magdalen Bridge at 14:30 GMT.

One person, thought to have jumped in to save the cyclist, was assisted out of the river.

At 16:30 a second man, in his 30s, was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in a life-threatening condition.

Magdalen Bridge was reduced to one lane of traffic but was later fully reopened.
