Police have stopped the search for the remains of two people who died in a fire in the grounds of Blenheim Palace.

Thames Valley Police said they are satisfied the two elderly occupants were inside the cottage during Wednesday's fire.

A spokesman said a file is being prepared for the coroner and the residents' next of kin have been informed.

He added: "Our thoughts are with the families of the two people."

The police and fire service are not treating the fire as suspicious and investigations into its cause are continuing.

Structural engineers were called to make the cottage safe before a thorough search of the premises could be carried out.
