A man who stabbed his elderly mother in the neck has been jailed for 18 years for attempted murder.

Steven Williams, 44, attacked his 72-year-old mother Daphne at her home in Hailey Avenue, Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, on 24 April.

He was found guilty by a majority verdict after a seven-day trial at Oxford Crown Court.

Police said Williams subjected his mother to "a serious, unprovoked attack, which very nearly killed her".

Det Insp Larry Johnson said: "I would like to commend the victim for her bravery throughout this process."

Williams has been made the subject of an indefinite restraining order, preventing him from contacting his mother.
