Police are appealing for witnesses to an "audacious" ram raid by masked men on a village shop.

The cash machine in the Co-op store in Milton-under-Wychwood, Oxfordshire, was targeted at about 00:45 BST on Saturday.

Several men using a stolen, dark-coloured Isuzu Trooper drove into the front of the store on Shipton Road.

They used the vehicle to pull the ATM out of the shop before driving off with the machine dragging behind.

'Rare occurrence'

Several vehicles were damaged as the gang tried to leave the village.

The ATM became disconnected and was found not far from the store. No cash was removed.

Thames Valley Police said two other vehicles were involved - a dark-coloured BMW with a concealed number plate and a smaller white car, possibly a Vauxhall Corsa or Fiat 500.

The Isuzu Trooper was abandoned about a mile from the scene and set on fire.

Det Sgt Wendy Greenslade said: "This was an audacious ram raid in a quiet village and I would like to reassure the local community that this is a rare occurrence."

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 and quote URN 50 (20/8).
